Digimon Evolution Cup English Unveils Exciting Format

on

Digimon has unveiled its newest addition to the competitive format. Recently, Bandai announced the return of Store Regionals in place of old Store Championships. While they are only to North American players at the time of writing, these tournaments will allow select stores to host up to 64-person events, with official prizing support. The prizing for Store Champions has yet to be locked in, though, but the once Japanese-only Evolution Cups have been announced for English as well.

Digimon Evolution Cup English events have technically existed before. The tournament series of the same name in the east, however, was renamed to Ultimate Cup in the west.

Digimon Evolution Cup English: East vs West

As stated before, Evolution Cup in its inception was mirrored as the Ultimate Cup in the West. Despite the stamps being shared and following the same prizing, the rulesets would differ, with the Western Ultimate Cup being a testing ground for other formats and ban lists until recently. Ultimate Cup has since returned to normal rules, mirroring that of its Asian counterpart. Due to the average shop size that these EVO Cups have, they have been run sometimes at a store capacity of 32 or lower, for full prizing.

The West aims to even the prizing playing field with the Digimon Evolution Cup English versions. These tournaments, separate from their Store Tournament and previously mentioned Store Regionals, have dedicated prizes for the tournament series. The tournament format is as follows.

  • 1 on 1, Best of 3 Format
  • Constructed (Bring your deck)
  • Swiss Rounds. No Top Cut is supported for this event
  • 55-minute match + 5 minutes overtime. Best-of-three game matches.

Players that enter will get an assorted pack containing one of seven available cards, with a full top four spread for the best four. The winner will also receive an additional “Champion Stamp” Magnamon. The Evolution Cups are listed for May, meaning this may be a continuously running event. It’s expected these cups will join the larger Ultimate Cups, Regionals, and other named events, with a rotating prize support.
