Daniil Medvedev said it wasn’t easy for him to serve against Sebastian Korda since he was hampered by a wrist or forearm pain during their Australian Open third-round match.
On Friday, seventh-seeded Medvedev exited the Australian Open following a shock 7-6 (7) 6-3 7-6 (4) loss to Korda.
“I think injuries can happen at any time. Alcaraz was injured at the end of last season. Kyrgios’ knee has been bothering him for a long time. In my case, for whatever reason today I felt some pain in my wrist or forearm, I don’t know. Actually, I think the serve was bothering me a bit. It’s not easy because I don’t know where it came from. We were working on it a lot before the game, but it didn’t go away. Definitely nothing serious, otherwise, I couldn’t play. But yeah, it’s a shame that on serve I felt like my hand was missing a bit,” Medvedev said, per Punto de Break.
Medvedev crashes out of the Australian Open and top-10
Medvedev, who made back-to-back Australian Open finals in 2021 and 2022, entered the opening Grand Slam of the ranked at No 8 in the world.
Since he lost in the third round and failed to defend a large chunk of points, he will find himself ranked outside the top-10 when the ATP rankings list gets updated after the Australian Open.
Medvedev, who was ranked at No 1 last February, admits his results are to blame for his top-10 exit.
“Mainly the result. Today was a little bit different because he was on top of me the whole time, and I was trying to come back in every set, trying to fight, trying to be there. That’s why tennis is so difficult because in the top 30 everyone can beat everyone. Of course top 10 are more consistent, and that’s why actually I’m going down a bit now, but everyone can beat everyone. Even Novak can lose sometimes, less times though than other people,” Medvedev said.
