Daniil Medvedev gets honest on how he now feels about his Monte Carlo outbursts

Daniil Medvedev says he is now the first to tell that his actions in Monte Carlo weren’t the best but remains hopeful that he will be able to react at least a bit better next time he finds himself in a tense situation or a situation where he feels he was wronged.

Two weeks ago in Monte Carlo, world No. 4 Medvedev had very explosive outbursts in two matches and both times it happened because he felt the umpires weren’t doing their job good enough. During those two outbursts, Medvedev absolutely lost his cool and that included shouting at a line umpire – swearing in English and Russian during one changeover – and claiming that one umpire with glasses should be fired because he couldn’t do properly his job.

After losing in the Monte Carlo round-of-16 to Karen Khachanov – in a match where umpires indeed made a critical error late in the match – Medvedev didn’t play last week and he is now slated to return to action at this week’s Madrid Masters.

Medvedev addresses his Monte Carlo outbursts in Madrid

“Mistakes happen, I make mistakes on the court and now sitting here calmly I recognize those mistakes,” Medvedev said.

“I love football, in every match there is some mistake and in tennis we have seen other players make some. But in the moment it is very difficult to control emotions, so I do not regret it, it is something that can happen. That’s how I reacted and I wish I hadn’t reacted like that.

“So we’ll see if it happens next time. I can’t promise anything, but I hope I can focus more on the game than on the mistake itself.”

In Madrid, Medvedev is the third-seeded player and has a first-round bye. After a first-round bye, Medvedev will be taking on the winner of the match between Christopher O’Connell.
