Another familiar face is being added to the roster – LB Damien Wilson

Now that the 2024 NFL Draft has come and gone, the Dallas Cowboys have a clearer picture of what holes they have left on their roster. That coupled with the fact that at 4 PM ET today any signings teams do will no longer affect next year’s comp pick formula, the feeling is that they would enter the week looking to be more aggressive.

That does look to be the case, as just mere hours after the team has agreed to bring back RB Ezekiel Elliott, the Cowboys are again adding to a position group that could use more of a veteran presence.

Cowboys signing old friend Damien Wilson

Wilson was added late in the season to bolster an linebacker group ahead of what was supposed to be a deep playoff run for the team. However, with the team going one-and-done in the NFC Wild Card Round, Wilson never saw game action and hence saw his contract with the team run out.

This will be the ‘third’ stint with the Cowboys, as Wilson was originally drafted by the Cowboys in 2015 out of the University of Minnesota.

Wilson spent four seasons with the team before signing with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2019, spending two seasons with them. Most recently before his latest brief Cowboys stint, Wilson spent 2021 with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and 2022 with the Carolina Panthers. He comes to Dallas looking to be a veteran presence in the middle of their defense that will be anchored by another veteran addition, Eric Kendricks.

In addition to two veteran LBs, the group also features Damone Clark, intriguing second-year player DeMarvion Overshown, and newly drafted Marist Liafau, rounding out the bunch that will carry much of the load for the group.

Wilson has tallied 419 tackles, nine sacks, and one interception in his career, with his best year coming in 2021 with the Jaguars where he finished his one season there with 106 total tackles, three sacks, and the one interception of his career.

This signing provides another veteran piece in the middle of a Cowboys defense that will be learning a new scheme under coordinator Mike Zimmer,
