What Edoga’s new deal means for Cowboys
The Dallas Cowboys were busy Tuesday afternoon. The team signed free agent running back Royce Freeman, who will compete for a roster spot in a backfield that is being rebuilt after the Cowboys lost Tony Pollard to the Tennessee Titans in free agency. Additionally, Dallas has followed up on a transaction from earlier this season. Dallas released the terms of their contract with reserve offensive lineman Chuma Edoga, whom the Cowboys re-signed earlier this offseason.

Edoga’s price tag for 2024 is affordable in more ways than one. The former third-round pick has experience at either tackle spot or offensive guard, starting 19 of 43 career games, including six for the Cowboys last season. Edoga started in place of Tyron Smith last season, who also left the Cowboys via free agency. Edoga’s versatility is a wild card as the Cowboys embark on the arduous task of replacing the sure-to-be Hall of Famer Smith.
There have been whispers of moving All-Pro guard Tyler Smith to left tackle, but that seems less likely, considering how well he adjusted to left guard. Of all the possible candidates to fill the void left by Tyron Smith, Edoga has the early edge at this stage of the offseason.
However, mock drafts have the Cowboys targeting offensive tackles early in the draft with the team’s 24th pick in this month’s draft. Edoga’s contract also gives the Cowboys the financial flexibility to do whatever they choose with Edoga’s roster status. The Cowboys’ options along the offensive line are wide-open days before the draft.
