Coach Darren Cahill: I’m sure tennis community will open its arms for Boris Becker

Jannik Sinner’s coach Darren Cahill is wishing Boris Becker nothing but the very best following the German’s release from the UK prison. 

Earlier this year, Becker was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of hiding assets after declaring bankrupt.

Last week, Becker was released from prison after serving eight months of his sentence.

“I’m looking forward to tennis welcoming Boris back to the sport. As a coach, commentator, mentor, advisor, anything he wants, as I’m sure the sport and the people within it will open their arms for him. We all wish him well,” Cahill tweeted.

Becker: You are a ‘nobody’ in prison

After being released from prison and deported to Germany, Becker sat down with a German channel Sat TV.

In his interview, Becker admitted that prison time was a very difficult period.

But now, Becker admits he has learned his lesson after realizing that you are “a nobody” when serving jail time.

“Prison is all about survival. This is the detention centre for criminals from London. Murderers, child molesters. There was no mirror. Later I wondered what I looked like. I’m also shocked by how I’ve changed. I made the mistake of only taking black stuff with me. I wanted to look cool, to do a bit of a gangster. But the whole thing has something important and good for me learned. And some things happen for a good reason. You’re nobody in prison. You’re just a number. Mine was A2923EV. I wasn’t called Boris. I was a number. And they don’t give a f— who you are,” Becker said during his appearance on German network Sat TV.

Before being sentenced to jail time, Becker was regularly a part of the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage.

Becker has been released from the UK prison but he is also not allowed yet to return to the country.

Because of that, Becker will likely be dropped from the BBC’s 2023 Wimbledon coverage.
