The Chargers doubled up on cornerbacks in the fifth round, this time adding size and speed in the form of Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart

With the 140th pick in the NFL Draft, the Chargers decided to double up on cornerbacks in the fifth round with their selection of Notre Dame defender Cam Hart.

While their selection of Tarheeb Still could have been considered a reach, the Chargers’ pick of Cam Hart from Notre Dame could be considered a steal. Ranked 102nd by the Consensus Big Board, Hart was lauded by analysts for the surprising fluidity his 6’3” frame brought to the table.

The redshirt senior likely would have seen some playing time as a true freshman (and probably at receiver), but a season-ending shoulder injury forced him into a medical redshirt year. That shoulder problem would resurface in his redshirt junior season, where he missed the final two games of the season.

Hart ran a 4.50-second 40-yard dash and sports a 33-inch arm length to go with his 6’3” 202-pound frame. In game, he recorded an astounding 23.01 miles per hour in Notre Dame’s internal GPS system.

There are technical things to clean up, especially off the release, where he can play with false steps and wasted movement. Despite his receiver background, Hart recorded no interceptions in his final two years at Notre Dame and he only recorded eight pass deflections over that span of time.

With two completely different approaches at the position in the fifth round, it should be interesting to see how the Chargers conduct the camp battles at the position.
