Bianca Andreescu shares comeback update amid missing last six months

on

2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu reveals she is targeting to play again during next month’s Sunshine Double in Indian Wells and Miami.

Andreescu, 23, last played at a WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal in early August, where she suffered a 6-3 6-2 loss to Camila Giorgi in the first round. Throughout the entire match, Andreescu was evidently struggling with a back issue but didn’t want to retire the match in front of her home fans.

After missing the US Open and the remainder of the 2023 season, Andreescu also announced her Australian Open withdrawal in mid-December. Andreescu, who has been sidelined for half a year now, targets to play again in Indian Wells, which starts on March 6th.

“It’s getting there. It’s not 100%, but I’m really hoping that I can play Indian Wells,” 2019 Indian Wells champion Andreescu told TSN.

While former world No. 4 Andreescu has been doing her best to recover as soon as possible, she underlines that it’s a type of injury where rushing things probably won’t do you well.

“A lot of visualization work, meditation, to try to speed up the recovery time. Obviously, with something like this, you can’t really speed up anything up, other than rest, so that’s what I’ve been doing,” Andreescu said.

When asked if she followed this past Australian Open, Andreescu admitted watching tennis while sidelined is “not fun” but added that it was “nice” following the opening Grand Slam of the season.

“It’s not fun watching other players play and you can’t play that specific tournament, but it was nice watching the Australian Open. It was nice to get back into the groove of things,” Andreescu said.

Addressing Aryna Sabalenka and Jannik Sinner’s triumph, Andreescu said she “was not surprised” by Sabalenka but admitted that the Italian’s win surprised her positively with his run.

If Andreescu plays in Indian Wells this year, it will be her fourth appearance in the desert.
