Sion counters in LoL – the three best choices

Looking for a front line tank? Sion is probably one of the best top laners out there that fit the requirement. Not only does he scale infinitely with his W, but he brings both good split-pushing potential and teamfighting capability. That being said, there are quite a few champions that can demolish him: here are the three best Sion counters.

If you’re fairly new to the game, check out our guide on how counter picks work in League of Legends. It will help you understand why counter picks are important, and how you need to take advantage of them to increase your win rate. Try to also understand how classes counter one another in LoL to improve your game knowledge so you always know which champions are stronger in each situtation.

Gwen – Gwen but AD version

As a tank shredder, Gwen is a perfect candidate to demolish Sion. While she can’t find much lethal early on, her scaling and late-game damage will allow her to mess around with Sion all the time she wants. Not to mention that she can match Sion’s split push, negating one of the tank’s core strengths. If you play Sion, make sure that Gwen is banned or that the enemy team is not in a position to pick her up.

Trundle – the worst laning phase

Trundle is one of the most lane-driven Sion counters in League of Legends. This is because the troll can chomp Sion to death, easily winning every single trade possible. And even if Sion becomes tankier, Trundle can negate a large part of those resistances with his ultimate, making him harder to kill.

Given the champion’s popularity as a top lane option, be aware that this matchup when hovering Sion in champion select.

Illaoi – bringing duels to the next level

While Illaoi doesn’t have the same laning power as Trundle, she destroys Sion once she gets her two core items. The damage from her tentacles and E will chunk through Sion’s health, and even if Sion tries to trade with her, the Kraken princess has too much sustain. Given that Sion also doesn’t have much mobility, Illaoi has no issues chasing after and hitting abilities.

The best thing Sion can do in this matchup is roaming around the map and hoping to impact the other lanes. Pay attention to his movements on the map and at the start of the fights.

Worst Sion counters

Nasus – takes too much to scale up

Even though Nasus can be considered one of Sion’s League of Legends counter picks late into the game, the matchup is Sion-favored until the 25th to 30th minute (depending on how many stacks Nasus has). This window of time is good enough for Sion to break multiple towers and build a big enough gold and experience gap to just get away with it.

Nasus will never be able to match Sion’s wave clearing early on, which means that lane priority will always be to his advantage. Unless you know how to play around it, avoid picking Nasus.

Renekton – outscaled

Renekton, instead, falls into the other category. This is because the crocodile will never kill Sion later on with the amount of health and resistances the tank will have. The only window to snowball will be in the first 10 minutes of the game, and even then, a kill might not amount to much. The only way Renekton can get a decent advantage is if he can abuse his strong early game to help his team in the skirmishes. Otherwise, Sion will beat him the longer the game goes.

How do you counter Sion items?

Counters in League of Legends do not just refer to the champions but also to the items built. When going up against Sion, it’s recommended to stack armor penetration (and lethality) to take him down. Below is a list of items to build based on the class of champions you’re playing:

  • Bruisers: Sterak’s Gage, Hullbreaker
  • AD assassins: Serylda’s Grudge
  • ADC champions: Guardian’s Angel, Blade of the Ruined King, Lord Dominik’s Regard
  • AP champions: Cryptobloom, Void Staff, Riftmaker
  • Tanks: Iceborn Gauntlet, Sunfire Aegis

What Champion counters Sion?

The three best champions are Gwen, Trundle, and Illaoi. There are others you can consider such as Vayne, Yone, and Kled but they are a lot more situational and work in specific situations or team compositions.

Does Sion counter Aatrox?

Aatrox is theoretically a good counter into Sion since the Darkin champion has an easy time hitting abilities due to Sion’s low mobility. In this matchup, Sion must play the waiting game and slowly scale up, not allowing Aatrox to snowball the game with a gold and experience lead.
