Baldur’s Gate 3 Tips And Tricks – Get An Easier Start

on

Baldur’s Gate 3 might seem like an intimidating open-ended RPG. There are so many different paths that are affected by your decisions at every point in the game. But breaking it down to the gameplay itself, you might be on the lookout for some Baldur’s Gate 3 tips and tricks that’ll help you get those positive endings. We have got you covered and without spoilers too.

So buckle up and get your spells ready as we dive in.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Tips and Tricks

Always remember to save

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the autosave feature only saves at key points in the game. It’s actually not a bad way of figuring out if Something Is About To Happen.

As a game that lives and dies on your decision making, saving regularly or before a fight or a choice that you might come to regret is a good habit to get into. So save your progress a lot!

When exploring the game, it’s possible and even likely to stumble onto another path you’re not ready to take. If the game crashes, you don’t want to be back where you first started.

So our number 1 tip is save, save, save. Really as often as game allows it.

Take advantage of rests

There are 2 types of rests in BG3: short rests and long rests. Functionally, these work in the same way as rests in Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition. But in Baldur’s Gate, you only get 2 short rests per long rest that you take. They can be used to refill a portion of health, some spell slots, and even specific skills.

You’ve probably noticed an icon with an eye closed and two orbs under it when playing the game on the right of your spell/inventory bar.  It’s the top icon in the picture below. Simply press it to take the rest instantly. Short rests can help when you are in a pinch and can’t fast-travel to camp because you’re in a “No Teleport Zone.”

Long rests, on the other hand, are done from the camp but are the best type of rests because not only do you get a full health bar, but they also refill all spell slots. The difference is, to take a long rest, you’ll need 40 camp supplies. So number 2 on our list of Baldur’s Gate 3 tips and tricks is to collect all of the food you see (as long as it isn’t rotten).

Here’s how to take a long rest:

Select the moon icon from the side of the menu
Go to the camp
Select the bedroll and “end the day”
Take the long rest

The concept of camps and rests isn’t particularly well explained for those who aren’t familiar with DnD rules. But we’d recommend taking them regularly to avoid a TPK. If you find it challenging to leave camps while playing, check out our guide on how to leave campsites in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Scrolls are overpowered

Scrolls are an excellent way to get non-magician Tavs to use spells without building them into it. Even getting some scrolls for spell casters such as wizards, sorcerers, clerics or an arcane trickster rogues can save a few spell slots here and there.

Although scrolls are a one-time-use item, they can come in clutch in very close scenarios. They’re also not uncommon – you can find them pretty much everywhere while exploring. If you’re not a loot fiend, we’d still recommend checking book cases for scrolls – you might find a Feather Fall or a high damage spell.

If you’d prefer not to spend your time looking around, most of the traders will have a scroll or 2 as well. Traders aren’t common, especially in the first 2 arcs of the story so take advantage when you find them!

Sell Junk to make space for Treasure

There’s a bit of a balancing act here. You’ll want to pick up enough treasure to sell and get money for the items you really want, but you reeally don’t want to get encumbered. Encumberance is when your party is carrying more than their strength stat allows them to. It reduces movement speed (distance allowed to travel on your turn in combat). You’ll also just walk annoyingly slowly out of combat too.

To avoid this, always sell junk, armor you don’t need, and pretty much anything you pick up.

Remember not to sell items with an orange border – these are quest items and you may need to go and buy them back from the trader to complete your quest.

If you find junk, instead of sending it to camp, just right click the item in your inventory and select “Add to wares.”

What this does is add them to your inventory with a mark on them the next time you are at a merchant. If you want to sell junk, a button that says “Sell wares” will light up and, when activated, will sell all the collected junk marked in all the party members’ inventories.

Revive party members

While in combat or sometimes just roaming the game, you can lose one or two party members. And your life is going to get really difficult if you don’t have a full party. It’s even worse if you lose a support member, but they can be revived at any point using the Revivify Scroll, which is either in your chest at the camp or can be found or bought.

Revivify scrolls are really rare. You’ll almost never find them lying around and they’re even rare and expensive from traders. If you find members are dying a lot, keep a levelled up Shadowheart in your party since Revivify is on the Cleric spell list and she’ll be able to cast it for free.

If someone dies by falling off a cliff, fear not! You won’t be able to cast the spell on their body but you can cast it on their spirit – the little blue ball of light that appears.

Always Check Bodies

The best loot can almost always be found on bodies, and the best junk can be sold. You can find some really high value armor, weapons and scrolls. Boss fights have a period after the battle to loot the bodies of the people you fought. Sometimes, even during the fight, you can find a scroll that turns the tide of battle in your favor, or you might find coins, and who doesn’t love money?

So, if you can loot the bodies of fallen enemies, don’t waste that chance!

Talk your way out

No one likes a murder hobo. Sometimes, a good roll on speechcraft can save you from an utterly one-sided beating. Sometimes, if your speechcraft is strong enough, it will de-aggro some specific enemies, and they won’t fight you or take you to prison.

To be able to talk your way out of sticky situations, we’d really recommend having a party member with a high charisma score. Paladins, sorcerers and bards are your best options for these smooth talking characters. If you have a Bard class in your party, try to use their speechcraft for specific dialogue choices and watch some really interesting things happen.
