ATP Finals: Jannik Sinner tops Stefanos Tsitsipas, makes perfect start

The home favorite Jannik Sinner made a winning start at the ATP Finals in Turin. World no. 4 took down Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 6-4 in an hour and 25 minutes, earning 200 ATP points and leading the group ahead of the evening duel. Jannik celebrated his first ATP Finals win in two years, dominating with his initial shot and breaking Stefanos two times, sealing the deal in straight sets. The Italian dropped ten points in ten service games, taming his strokes nicely and keeping the pressure on the other side. The Greek could not follow that pace, losing ground in the middle of the opener and experiencing another break at the beginning of the second set to finish on the losing side. Stefanos held at love in the encounter’s first game after a fine attack, and Jannik responded in the same way a few minutes later for 1-1.

The Greek grabbed the third game with an ace, and the Italian landed a service winner in the next one. Tsitsipas netted a backhand in the fifth game, losing serve and falling behind. Sinner landed an ace at 3-2, producing another fine hold and forging a 4-2 advantage. Stefanos reduced the deficit in game seven before Jannik moved 5-3 up with another hold at love after an ace down the T line. The Greek fired a forehand winner in the ninth game, holding at 15 and prolonging the battle. The home favorite served for the set in game ten and landed a service winner after deuce for 6-4 in 39 minutes.

Stefanos experienced another blow in the second set’s first game, wasting three game points and netting a backhand to drop serve and find himself a set and a break down. With a boost on his side, Jannik painted a lob winner in the second game, holding at love and moving closer to the finish line. Stefanos worked hard in the third game, defending three break points and claiming five consecutive points to remain within one break deficit. Sinner served well in games four and six, hitting a service winner and opening a 4-2 gap. The younger player had no issues behind the initial shot in the remaining games, embracing a hold at 15 in game ten to move over the top and earn the victory.
