The Cambodian government awarded over 780,000 USD to athletes who secured bronze, silver and gold medals at various international sporting events.

The award ceremony took place at the Peace Palace on the afternoon of February 26, 2024, and was presided over by Prime Minister Hun Manet. The ceremony celebrated athletes’ successes in events such as the Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games, World Championships and the 20th Southeast Asian University Games.

Recipients of the awards shared their joy and gratitude, feeling encouraged and motivated by the recognition. Khon Chan Sopheak Neath, a notable Vovinam athlete, expressed immense happiness for the opportunity to receive the prize money directly from the Prime Minister, appreciating the Royal Government’s support for athletes.

Reflecting on the past, the Prime Minister noted the significance of this era for Cambodian sports, contrasting it with a time when Cambodians could only watch international athletes on TV without the chance to compete or win medals themselves. He emphasized that the current achievements are a testament to the peace and stability the country enjoys.

The Prime Minister expressed hope that Cambodian athletes would continue to strive for excellence and secure even more victories in future competitions.

The Prime Minister said the medalists have importantly contributed to promoting Cambodia’s reputation and prestige in regional and international arenas. He added that Cambodia has given priority to the development of the sports sector, saying that sports have helped boost friendship, solidarity and international cooperation among countries and peoples.

A recent report from the Minister of Education highlighted that Cambodia has participated in international competitions across 11 sports disciplines, including jujitsu, taekwondo, fin swimming, dance sport, petanque and sailing.

A total of 126 athletes, who earned gold, silver and bronze medals in 12 international and regional games between 2021 and 2023, received monetary rewards.

Hang Chuon Naron, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, said at the event that the rewards were a huge incentive for athletes, encouraging them to train hard for future competitions.
