Are there any free agents the Broncos should target ahead of training camp?

There are a lot of big names sitting out there. Should the Denver Broncos try to sign any of them before training camp?

When I looked over the available free agent list this week, I noticed quite a few big names sitting out there. I hit up the Mile High Report staff to get their thoughts on who was out there and if any name stood out to them that the Denver Broncos might want to consider signing before the season.

Of course, we’ll start off with the big ‘nope’ of the group here and then shut him down with some actual names that might be interesting for Denver.

Scotty Payne: Nope.

People will say Justin Simmons, but that is likely not a reality. The team is low on cap after acquiring John Franklin-Myers and the team re-signed P.J. Locke and signed Brandon Jones after parting ways with Simmons. Seems like both parties have moved on and Simmons will sign with a contender closer to the start of camp.

As for the rest of the free agents available, there isn’t anyone that jumps off the page. The team has addressed most of their needs already in various ways. They selected Bo Nix at 12th overall and added Zach Wilson, added two backs, two receivers, multiple depth options along the OL, depth and a starter at IDL, drafted an EDGE, added a starter at ILB and brought back Jonas, signed a vet and drafted a corner and added two safeties.

The only spot that really hasn’t been addressed outside of some UDFA additions is tight end. That did bring back Trautman but Dulcich and his hamstrings appear to be their main receiving threat at that position. Lucas Krull is a name to watch there but outside of TE, I’m good.

Joe Mahoney: Calais Campbell. We need depth for DL and we’ve been trying to bring him back to Colorado for years.

Nick Burch: Love Calais, but he’s pushing 40. I’d be down with Michael Thomas for the right price. I still think he has value left as a playmaker, and given the “will they/wont they” drama surrounding Sutton, he’d be nice to have.

Ross Allen: Connor Williams. This comes with a very big “IF”, but if Connor Williams manages to come back from his ACL injury from last season, then he would be a massive grab for this Broncos offensive line. Williams is a stud and is coming off of the two best seasons of his career. He might even come with the added bonus of a below-market-value contract due to his injury.

Ian St. Clair: Agree with Joe on Calais Campbell. I’ve been a fan of his since he was in Jacksonville. It would be a good depth addition to the defensive line while also adding a veteran leader to the locker room. Plus, Campbell won’t cost that much to the salary cap. The other free agent is Hunter Henry, with the caveat he’s affordable. Henry is arguably the best tight end remaining in free agency. He would fill a big need on offense. If the two sides could make it work financially this could really help that side of the ball, namely Bo Nix and especially in the red zone for whomever plays quarterback.

Jeff Essary: Second the Michael Thomas suggestion. He’s been successful with Payton and could be a cheap, big target who knows the system and could get some rotational looks in the slot.

I also like Connor Williams as a center option depending on his health status. He’s coming off a pretty significant knee injury, so there’s question marks of whether or not he’ll be ready to play this year, but could be a more experienced option at center than Denver has right now – and I think center is ultimately the best spot for Williams who struggled at OG in Dallas.

Also…………… Dak Prescott in 2025.

Adam Malnati: If the Broncos sign Dak in 2025 I will puke for 8 days. I’m not sure theirs money in the coffers for too much. Most of the possible free agents have been mentioned. Mostly, I’m fine with doing nothing. Whatever they do, make sure it will help Bo Nix become the QB that Sean Payton needs.

Tim Lynch: Yeah, not touching the Dak nonsense. I’m lowkey with Ross on this one. Denver could use an upgrade at center with the young players currently on the roster. That could be a quality pickup if he’s healthy.

Is there any free agent sitting out there that you think would make this Broncos team better in 2024? If so, share in the comments section below.
