An under-the-radar benefit of the New York Jets adding tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses

Two veterans can mentor the young offensive tackles

In response to an offensive line that some would describe as “atrocious” in 2023, the New York Jets approached the 2024 offseason with a clear emphasis on improving the offensive line. This included the addition of guard John Simpson, the additions of veteran tackles Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses, and the selection of rookie offensive tackle Olu Fashanu in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft.

The clearest benefit of the Smith and Moses moves is that they make the New York Jets better in 2024. These players are replacing offensive tackles Mekhi Becton and Duane Brown, respectively. On paper those are significant upgrades.

However, there is an added benefit to having two veterans who have achieved as much as Smith (2x all pro and 8x pro bowler) and Moses (152 games played across 10 year career), which is that they know a lot which can be passed onto younger tackles, such as 2024 first round pick Olu Fashanu and 2023 4th round pick Carter Warren. Thankfully, that knowledge sharing process seems to have already begun.

While the eventual success of Fashanu and Warren will come down to far more than simply picking the brains of some veterans, the extra knowledge certainly can’t hurt.
