2024 DAYTONA SUPERCROSS PRE-RACE REPORT: POINTS, TV SCHEDULE & MORE

One of the best races of the year is finally here in Daytona Beach Florida. After seven rounds of racing the points battle is still extremely close through the top five riders. Eli Tomac had an amazing comeback last weekend in Arlington where he started almost last after an early crash and made his way into second. Jett Lawrence also looked very good through the night but a few mistakes had pushed him back to fourth by the end of the race. Cooper Webb maximized his points by winning the event and sits only three points out of the lead. Austin Forkner had a scary crash last weekend in Arlington and had to forgo the points lead to Max Anstie who is looking to continue holding the red plate through Daytona. However it will not be easy as riders like Pierce Brown, Daxton Bennick and of course, Haiden Deegan are all looking for that top spot. For the full report read down below.

2024 DAYTONA SUPERCROSS // FULL COVERAGE

HEADING INTO DAYTONA

Cooper Webb’s victory last weekend in Arlington has propelled his momentum forward heading into the Daytona Supercross. Cooper stayed consistent in second last week when a crash from Jett Lawrence had pushed him into the pole position, he resisted a charge from the Honda rider after he had gotten up from his crash and was able to grab the win. Because Jett Lawrence ended up crashing for a second time he had ended up in fourth overall. This gave Webb a boost in points only putting him three points down from the red plate holder. Now heading to Daytona which is a race Webb has never won in the premier class, however last year he was able to grab second place only on second down from the winner Eli Tomac.

FLORIDA NATIVE MALCOLM STEWART

We were able to witness a little bit more life out of Malcolm Stewart last weekend in Arlington. Though a crash with Ken Roczen after tangling with Vince Friese early in the main event had stopped us from seeing his full potential in the main, Malcolm did have great lap times through the races and an outstanding heat race. Very rarely this year have we seen anyone straight up pass Jett Lawrence once he had gotten into the lead, however, last weekend Malcolm was able to make an incredible move on Jett around the outside of the sand section headed into one of the more technical rhythm sections on the track. Malcolm did make a mistake in the following laps that allowed Jett to get back by. But we did see some incredible riding from the Rockstar Husqvarna rider. Heading into Daytona will be a home race for Malcolm and we hope to see the same intensity as Arlington.

THE KING OF DAYTONA

We can’t talk about the race in Daytona without bringing up Eli Tomac. Someone who has mentioned in the past it is his favorite race of the year and he has proved so time and time again. Eli has won the Daytona Supercross seven times, more than any other rider ever. Five times he has won consecutively, and after his found speed in Arlington, he is definitely on the radar for another win this weekend in Daytona. Last weekend Eli fell on the opening lap of the main event and worked his way through the field finishing in second. Not only did he pass the entire field of riders he seemed to have made the passes with ease, seemingly like no other riders had any defense against the former champion. This weekend he will be one to watch and given if he can stay mistake-free and get a good start, he has a high chance at winning once again.

INJURED LIST:

GUILLEM FARRES – FEMUR

Guillem suffered a broken femur while training during the week leading up to the Daytona Supercross, he will be out for the foreseeable future.

Team Manager Nathan Ramsey states: “Guillem is one of the most liked riders in the industry that I have ever worked with. I am completely gutted that he had an unfortunate crash today while testing at the Baker’s Factory. He is not only tough, but he is strong, and we will support him in every way to get him back at the races doing what he loves.”

AUSTIN FORKNER – BACK & SHOULDER

Austin had one of the scarier crashes we’ve seen in a while where he came up short entering a rhythm section which knocked his hand off the bars and sent him flying onto the infield concrete. As a result, he fractured his L3-L4 in his spine as well as a fractured scapula. Fortunately, his injuries did not require surgery, and is expected to make a full recovery. We are unsure of his expected return, but will not be for the rest of the Supercross season.

COLT NICHOLS – SHOULDER

Colt Nichols 2024 Beta Supercross teamColt Nichols is riding for the brand-new Liqui Moly Beta Supercross team. Unfortunately, he broke his shoulder blade before the season started. He is back riding as of this week, but he is easing into it and we don’t expect him to line up for at least a few weeks.

ENZO LOPES – FOREARM

Enzo Lopes 2024 YamahaEnzo Lopes underwent “Arm Pump” surgery on his forearms, which is claimed to help improved blood flow to the arms. This type of surgery usually takes a few weeks to recover from but in Enzo’s case, it has been lingering over the last couple of months. He decided to sit out Detroit to continue the healing process and is trying to get back to full strength for the next East Coast round in Arlington, Texas.

Enzo Lopes stated: “Riding for Star Racing comes with a lot of expectations, especially after my momentum from last season. Unfortunately, the cards we were dealt with this off-season were out of our control, and with that, we agreed on missing Round 1 so that I can be back to 100% soon. I am super bummed, but I know in the long run this will be the best decision for me and also the team.”

JETT REYNOLDS – SHOULDER (OUT FOR SEASON)

Jett Reynolds ClubMxJett Reynolds suffered an AC separation to his shoulder in qualifying at Detroit. Then, while training this week, he crashed again.

ClubMX stated: “Jett recovered quickly from his AC separation in Detroit and was back on the bike relatively early. He has been active and training consistently all the way through today. Unfortunately, in the last session of the day he crashed pretty hard, reinjuring his shoulder bad enough to require some surgery. This kid cannot catch a break but we will stick with him. He obviously has the skill and desire to perform at the highest level, now we just have to prove it. Wish him well on a speedy recovery.”

CHRISTIAN CRAIG – ELBOW

Christian Craig posted on Instagram that he had been riding with elbow pain throughout the majority of the season. He said that this pain has been progressively increasing and he will sit out the race in Dallas. He will be getting some tests done in the upcoming week to diagnose the injury.

Christian Craig stated: “Bummed to say I will be missing the race today in Dallas. I’ve been dealing with elbow pain that’s progressively getting worse since the season started. I’ve tried to push through it but unfortunately, it’s to the point where I can’t hang on after a few laps. Going to get some scans done and see what’s going on.”

EVAN FERRY – SHOULDER

Evan Ferry had a crash during press day for the Arlington Supercross causing an injury to his shoulder, and will sit out from racing. It is not clear the extent of the injury or how long before he returns to racing.

2024 DAYTONA RACE DAY SCHEDULE

Daytona is usually one of the longer tracks on the schedule and this year is no different. A long start heads into a left-handed sweeper which heads under the tunnel. Different than past weekends as weve seen the start directly enter into a rhythm section. The rhythms this weekend are long but have a bit more spacing between jumps and some elevation changes with added walls. We see a long whoop section after a technical mogul section and a long sand straight away which will be a challenge for riders.

450SX CHAMPIONSHIP POINT STANDINGS

Jett Lawrence lost a few points this past weekend in Arlington after a couple of mishaps in the main event. Still within range, the top four riders of Lawrence, Webb, Plessinger, and Sexton are all within ten points of each other. This leads to great action as we begin into the midway point of the season. Cooper Webb has a chance to tie things up if he is able to win in Dayton and Jett Lawrence gets second. But there is still a large list of proven winners who are looking to make up those valuable points as well.

250SX EAST CHAMPIONSHIP POINT STANDINGS

A new points leader has emerged after the second round of East Coast racing in Arlington. After Austin Forkner’s scary crash, the points lead was given to Max Anstie who has had two successful rounds of racing. However Pierce Brown is only four points down and the remaining top five are close in tow as well. Haiden Deegan won in Arlington maximizing his points after a crash left him with very few points in Detroit. Its still anyones season and we should see another shakeup from the tough track in Daytona.
