Amon-Ra St. Brown gave ESPN a very optimistic update on contract talks with the Detroit Lions.

The last we heard of contract talks between the Detroit Lions and wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, the two sides were preparing to meet at the NFL Combine at the beginning of March. Since then, it’s been pretty quiet, although St. Brown has not been spotted at voluntary offseason activities at Allen Park lately.

However, there is good news on the horizon. St. Brown talked with ESPN’s Eric Woodyard this week, and gave a very optimistic outlook on where negotiations currently stand.

“I’m not worried, I know that’s gonna get taken care of here in the near future,” St. Brown said. “Not too worried about that. Talks have been going great. So, I’m excited for that.”

It should come as little surprise that St. Brown expects a deal to get done. The Lions obviously believe St. Brown is a centerpiece to their entire roster, both because of his culture-setting work ethic, and his impressive production on the field.

“What doesn’t make him special? Everything he does is why he’s who he is,” coach Dan Campbell said in March. “His work ethic, his desire to be good, his will to overcome, the amount of film that he watches, the pre-practice warmup, the post-practice routine that he has. It’s just everything about him is about being the best player he can possibly be. Being the best player, not (just) that he can be.”

Since 2021—St. Brown’s rookie season—only four wide receivers have more receptions than him (315). His 3,588 receiving yards ranks eighth over that span, and his 21 touchdowns ranks 13th.

This offseason, a few wide receivers got big, new deals. DeVonta Smith got a three-year, $75 million ($51 million guaranteed) deal. Michael Pittman earned a three-year, $70 million deal ($46 million guaranteed). And veteran Mike Evans got a two-year, $41 million deal ($25 million guaranteed).

In addition to St. Brown, the Lions have expressed interest in offering contract extensions to quarterback Jared Goff and left tackle Taylor Decker this offseason. Last week, Goff said that there have been discussions, and he’s hoping to stay in Detroit for the long term.

“I love it here, and I would love to be here for a long time,” Goff said. “Really special, like I said, to play in front of these fans. Being able to provide a winning culture in the last year-and-a-half or so, and see them experience that and be a part of that, has been fun. By no means are we satisfied, or happy to be here or any of that. It’s about what’s next, man.”
