More of the latest Browns news and notes from around the web in today’s dose of the Sunday Dawg Chow.
Dawgs By Nature:
- NFL draft: How high the Browns could trade up, analyzing options (Jared Mueller) – While the Cleveland Browns seem more likely to trade down than up in the 2024 NFL Draft, and general manager Andrew Berry is in “no hurry” to give away good players despite trade rumors, the idea of trading up in a draft is always enticing.
- Browns NFL Draft profile: DE Brennan Jackson (Barry Shuck) – A young guy to provide depth and hopefully get into the rotation is what the Cleveland Browns need. Pass rushers are always needed in the NFL. Brennan Jackson is a physical player with a good motor, smart, and has no quit. He can rush with both his hands in the dirt and as an overhang stand-up rusher, if you can work with him to develop a better pass rush plan, he can be a solid contributor at the NFL level.
- National Browns 7-round mock draft brings a couple new names (Jared Mueller) – With a name like Matt Goncalves, you better spend a lot of time working on your lower leg muscles. Calves… Cavs… Cleveland Cavaliers… Cleveland Browns! See, a few days before the NFL draft we can still come up with creative ways to start a Browns mock draft coverage piece. A long walk for a short drink of water for sure.
Cleveland Browns:
- New kickoff rule has Cleveland Browns ‘trying to understand’ impact on game (Beacon Journal) – It may be one of the most transformative rules in the NFL in years. However, very few in the league actually know what impact it’s going to have on the game. That’s the reaction to the new kickoff rule the league owners passed last month by those who hope to utilize it to win games. That includes Browns coach Kevin Stefanski, who acknowledged this week just how much time he and his staff have spent trying to learn the rule.
- Browns head into NFL draft this year with eye on 2025 and beyond (The News-Herald) – The Cleveland Browns for the third year in a row are going into the draft without a first-round pick, and for the first time in a long, long time they are heading into the draft without a gaping hole that needs filling.
- Maurice Hurst II named Browns’ Stay in the Game Ambassador (Browns Wire) – Back for his second season with the Cleveland Browns, defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II is teaming up to encourage kids to stay in school. Hurst is the new Stay in the Game Ambassador, hoping to improve attendance and set up more kids for success later in life.
- How Browns have weathered no 1st-round pick in 3 straight NFL Drafts due to Deshaun Watson trade (cleveland.com) – How’s life without three straight first-round picks for the Browns? They head into the NFL Draft next week without a first-round pick for the third straight season due the Deshaun Watson trade, but they’re not exactly bereft of talent.
NFL:
- Bills QB Josh Allen embracing leadership amid veteran departures (ESPN) – Amid all of the changes that have come to the Buffalo Bills this offseason and with the draft still less than a week away, quarterback Josh Allen remains a vital constant for the organization.
- Former Chicago Bears executive Bill Tobin passes away (chicagobears.com) – Longtime Chicago Bears executive Bill Tobin passed away Friday at the age of 83. Tobin joined the Bears in 1975 as director of pro scouting and held that position until being promoted to director of player personnel in 1984. He was later elevated to vice president of personnel in 1986 and remained in that role through 1992.
- Jaguars GM Trent Baalke on QB Trevor Lawrence contract extension: ‘We’re working, but you can’t force this stuff’ (NFL.com) – It’s been a busy offseason for Jaguars general manager Trent Baalke. Jacksonville acquired QB Mac Jones, added WR Gabe Davis to a three-year deal and took care of signing pass rusher Josh Allen to a five-year, $150 million extension after he received the non-exclusive tag in March. Next on the docket possibly for Baalke and the Jaguars: Franchise QB Trevor Lawrence’s contract extension.
- Roman Gabriel, Star Quarterback of the 1960s and ’70s, Dies at 83 (New York Times) – In 16 seasons with the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles, he played in four Pro Bowl games and reached the postseason twice.
