White House releases statement as Novak Djokovic is officially set for US Open return

Novak Djokovic is officially set to return to the US Open this August after the United States authorities confirmed the current vaccine mandate will be lifted on May 11th.

Djokovic, who was beaten by Daniil Medvedev in the 2021 US Open final, missed the last Grand Slam of the season in 2022 because he wasn’t allowed to enter the United States as an unvaccinated foreigner.

Djokovic also missed all of the US Masters events last year, as well as Indian Wells and Miami this past March.

But most importantly for Djokovic, he will be allowed to compete at the US Open later this year.

“Today, we are announcing that the Administration will end the Covid-19 vaccine requirements for Federal employees, Federal contractors, and international air travellers at the end of the day on May 11, the same day that the Covid-19 public health emergency ends,” a White House spokesman said.

Djokovic accepted his 2022 US Open fate and moved on

In February, Djokovic told CNN that he “had no regrets” over missing the 2022 US Open.

Even though Djokovic absolutely wanted to compete at the US Open last year, he realized that regretting his US Open fate would not bring him any good.

That’s why Djokovic simply accepted his 2022 US Open fate and moved on.

“No, I have no regrets. I’ve learned through life that regrets only hold you back and basically make you live in the past. And I don’t want to do that. I also don’t want to live too much in the future. I want to be as much as in the present moment, but of course think about future, create a better future,” Djokovic told CNN in February.

At the US Open, Djokovic is a nine-time finalist and has three titles.

In the 2021 US Open final, Djokovic surprisingly suffered a straight-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev.
