The Jets left tackle faces a gauntlet of great pass rushers in 2024

I waxed poetic when the New York Jets signed left tackle Tyron Smith, comparing his level of talent to Jets great Darrelle Revis in terms of just how good they are at what they do.

Form a team success standpoint, that means a ton.

It also means it’s going to make for some great television for Jets fans week in and week out as we get to watch any matchup against a great edge rusher become a “best v. best” matchup whenever they line up opposite Smith. So, which great edge rushers could Smith face this season based on the Jets schedule?

(Note: I acknowledge that many edge rushers line up over the right tackle, but it’s possible even a few snaps end up over Tyron at left tackle so I’m opting to list them all for the sake of dreaming on cool matchups)

  • Week 1 @ San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa (PFF grade of 92.2 in 2023)
  • Week 5 @ Minnesota Vikings: Danielle Hunter (PFF grade of 78.0 in 2023)
  • Week 6 & Week 17 against Buffalo Bills: Greg Rousseau (PFF grade of 87.1 in 2023)
  • Week 7 @ Pittsburgh Steelers: TJ Watt (PFF grade of 91.9 in 2023) and Alex Highsmith (PFF grade of 90.0 in 2023)
  • Week 8 v. Houston Texans: Will Anderson Jr. (PFF grade of 81.6 in 2023) and was taken with the third overall pick in the 2023 draft
  • Week 10 v. Indianapolis Colts: Samson Ebukam (PFF grade of 84.4 in 2023)
  • Weeks 14 and 18 against Miami Dolphins: Andrew Van Ginkle (PFF grade of 91.1 in 2023), Bradley Chubb (PFF grade of 88.8 in 2023), and Jaelan Phillips (PFF grade of 79.8 in 2023)
  • Week 15 @ Jacksonville Jaguars: Josh Allen (PFF grade of 89.5 in 2023)

Basically, we’re going to get a potential premier matchup every other week or so out of Tyron Smith. Pretty cool to think that the New York Jets defensive line has gone from “essentially unwatchable” to having a “must see NFL matchup” in just a few months time.
