Well that didn’t take long. According to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Los Angeles Chargers are expected to sign former Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Kellen Moore as their offensive coordinator.
Moore will be joining a Chargers team that finished 19th in offensive DVOA, their worst performance since Justin Herbert took over as starter.

The Dallas Cowboys and offensive coordinator Kellen Moore have mutually agreed to part ways, according to a report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Moore joined the Dallas Cowboys as a quarterbacks coach in 2018 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. He survived the coaching transition from Jason Garrett to Mike McCarthy, with McCarthy giving him play-calling duties.
The Dallas Cowboys has finished in the top-ten of offensive DVOA twice under Moore, including a second-best 24.5% DVOA in Moore’s inaugural 2019 season. The Cowboys finished 15th in offensive DVOA this season. Their 12.8% offensive passing DVOA was their worst under Moore in a season where Dak Prescott plays at least 10 games.
According to David Moore of Dallas Morning News, Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy will take over as the team’s play caller going forward. McCarthy previously called plays while head coach of the Green Bay Packers, eventually giving up the role and re-claiming it back.

Kellen Moore’s play calling didn’t lose them the divisional game… unless they’re changing the scheme in some way (nothing implies they are), this just seems like a classic scapegoat move.

I don’t think this is an indictment of Moore. I think he ultimately will be better off moving on and getting new experience elsewhere. I had hoped, though, that this would be a move to bring in fresh perspectives and energy around Dak, and this does not look like that. It looks like a last chance for McCarthy, a probable bridge year to Payton.

Possibly because McCarthy really wants to be an OC, not a head coach; he just needs to be head coach to hire himself, because no one else will? Or he likes the title of “Head Coach”, but prefer the duties of “Offensive Coordinator”?
