Tommy Paul’s path at the Australian Open 2023

Tommy Paul, who won the US derby against Australian Open surprise Ben Shelton 7-6 6-3 5-7 6-4, reached and lost his first Slma semifinal. An undoubtedly magical moment for the New Jersey tennis player, who had never gone beyond the round of 16 in a Major (Wimbledon) and who reached this incredible milestone, only stopped by the Serbian star Novak Djokovic. Nole beat Pal in three sets, reaching Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.

The 25-year-old played in a big tournament, and in addition to his young compatriot, he also beat Jan-Lennard Struff, Alejando Davidovich Fokina, Jenson Brooksby and Roberto Bautista Agut in sequence. In the post match conference after the win against Shelton, Paul recounted the mix of emotions he felt:

“I’m very excited. I did what I had to do to win this match, I was professional and tidy. But the tournament wasn’t over for me, I want to play two more matches..It’s very important to me to be the first American to reach a semifinal of the Australian Open since Roddick.I remember seeing Andy play when I was starting out.

Ever since I was a kid, all the coaches have been telling us that American tennis needed a new star. This has made us more competitive with each other because we want to do well not only for our own interest, but also for our role of representing the United States.

I panicked a bit when they told me my mom was coming because tennis players are quite obsessive and when something works we don’t want to change anything.

Also, I thought she might make me nervous. However, I know all the sacrifices she made of her. It was tremendously emotional to see her in my box. It’s great to feel your support from her and I think she can give me the energy I need for the rest of the tournament. I was a dominator in my youth phase, but then it took me quite a while to establish myself at a professional level. The last few years have been slow but steady steps towards important professional growth and I believe that in 2023 I will be able to get to where I think I should and want to be, which is in the top 10 or 15.

I regret not going to University for a year or two when I finished my junior internship. Everything I’ve been through makes me who I am and I try not to look back, but I’m clear that maybe the best thing would have been to compete in the NCAA.”
