Russell and Hulkenberg handed penalty points in Monaco

George Russell and Nico Hulkenberg were sanctioned by the Stewards for their actions in Sunday’s Monaco Grand Prix.

Russell was hit with a 5-second time penalty for unsafely rejoining the track after running down the escape road at Mirabeau and clipping Sergio Perez’s Red Bull in the closing stages of the race under the wet conditions.

The sanction had no bearing on the Mercedes driver’s final fifth-place position in the standings, but he did collect two penalty points on his Super Licence, increasing his twelve-month rolling tally to six points overall.

After the race, Russel said that he was kicking himself over the mistake which he believed cost him a podium finish in the Principality.

Hulkenberg was initially punished for an opening lap contact with Williams’ Logan Sargeant, but the German driver’s failure to properly serve his 5-second penalty earned him another 5-second sanction which he served when he pitted on lap 56 of 78.

However, the Hulk also collected two penalty points for his offense.

“The weekend hasn’t been too good but still, the race was fun going through all the different stages with different tyres and conditions,” he said after concluding his afternoon well down the order in 17th position.

“I’m happy I got through it and came through quite well. I feel the pace was actually pretty decent when I had some clear track but for most of the race, I was stuck in traffic like you are in Monaco.

“To some extent, I feel the problems we had have been Monaco specific, so I’m quite hopeful in Barcelona we should be in a better position, so I look forward to that.”
