Rory McIlroy, triple-bogey at the Memorial ’23

Davis Riley is therefore finally the first leader of this Memorial Tournament 2023. With his series of four birdies over his last seven holes, the winner of the last Zurich Classic played in doubles with his American compatriot Nick Hardy, blew first place from Matt Wallace to settle alone in the lead at -5 (67).

Rory McIlroy, results

Already winner of the modest Corales Puntacana Championship tournament in March, Matt Wallace has the opportunity to strike a blow at Jack Nicklaus, on one of the tournaments boosted to 20 million dollars of the PGA Tour. Author of a huge outward journey (-5), the Englishman limited the breakage on the return, for a final score of -4. Only Riley has done better.

At the start of the 18 they played together, Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth were in a fight for the top spot. After the terrible last hole of the Muirfield Village course, the American clung to the podium with his only bogey of the day, while the Northern Irishman conceded a triple-bogey to post a lackluster par total.

The two men were initially trapped by their greed in wanting to cut the inside of this right dogleg. The second shot was also missed for both players, but it was on the third shot that the difference was made between a McIlroy who paid dearly for his new kamikaze attempt to attack the green, against the wisdom of Spieth who preferred to stay short of the green . The sequel proved the Texan right with a world number 3 pushed back to 33rd place, in par.

If McIlroy lost big on a single hole, world number one Scottie Scheffler was never on the pace and he even finished above par (+2, 59th). Jon Rahm could well take the opportunity to recover the planetary throne. Currently at the gates of the top 10, the Spaniard must win or finish alone second. A nod to the phlegmatic Joel Dahmen who returned an unbalanced chip to put on a show, which did not prevent him from signing a modest 76 (+4).

Rory was born in Holywood, Northern Ireland where he attended Sullivan Upper School. He belongs to the Holywood Golf Club, where he began his first training sessions followed by Michael Bannon, a coach he has maintained to this day.
