Rafael Nadal issues statement, reveals details on psoas muscle surgery

on

Rafael Nadal confirmed his psoas muscle surgery went well and revealed he was told by the doctors the estimated recovery time is around five months.

On Friday, it was reported that Nadal surgically addressed the psoas muscle injury that has kept him sidelined since the Australian Open.

Today, June 3rd, Nadal is celebrating his 37th birthday.

In a statement, Nadal admitted he would have preferred to be celebrating his birthday at Roland Garros.

“Hello everyone. As you know last night I had surgery. Everything went well and the arthroscopy was on the left psoas tendon that has kept me out of competition since January. An old injury to the labrum of my left hip was also regularized, which will surely help the better evolution of the tendon. I want to thank doctors Marc Philippon, Jaume Vilaró and Angel Ruiz-Cotorro for their work. I will start progressive functional rehabilitation immediately and the normal recovery process they tell me is 5 months, if all goes well. Once again thank you for all the support you have shown me and that you show me every day. Today also on my birthday. Not in the desired or dreamed place, although THANK YOU anyway,” Nadal wrote on Twitter.

Nadal out for the remainder of the 2023 season

Nadal facing a five-month recovery means that the Spaniard’s 2023 season is over.

When Nadal sustained an injury to his psoas muscle in January, it was reported the Spaniard would be out for six to eight weeks.

But instead of returning to action at the start of the clay season, Nadal suffered setbacks in his recovery and ended up missing some of his favorite tournaments.

Now that Nadal has surgically addressed his psoas injury, he will be hoping to return healthy in 2024, which he plans to be his final season.

Nadal’s big wish for 2024 is to be healthy and ready for the French Open and Paris Olympics.
