PSG: Campos swings on Messi

The Portuguese spoke to Telefoot about Messi’s contract renewal and PSG news.

Luis Campos, PSG’s sports adviser, spoke in an interview with Telefoot to discuss the latest movements at PSG. The Ile-de-France club had a bad winter transfer period, failing to sign a single player. Campos started the interview by talking about the problem of signing Chelsea winger Hakim Ziyech. “We did everything we could to sign Ziyech. All three parties had to work. There was a predisposition on our part, on the part of the player, but not on the part of Chelsea, unfortunately at the last moment,” he said.

Messi’s future at PSG

Campos, criticized by PSG fans after his first two transfer windows to the club, admitted “being 100% involved” in the project and also had words for Kylian Mbappé, whose renewal “was the most important event of the year for the project” and that he noticed being “sad” after the injury of the Bondynois against Montpellier. This setback will keep him out for three weeks and prevent him, barring a miracle, from playing in the knockout stages of the Champions League against Bayern Munich. “Losing Kylian, of course, is hard. I saw him very dejected after his injury. But I also saw him today working to speed up his recovery as quickly as possible. This is the personality of the winners,” he added.

He also mentioned Messi’s lease extension. The Argentinian has still not signed anything with PSG despite the two parties having reached an agreement in principle during the last World Cup. “Right now we are negotiating with Messi for his renewal. I would like to keep it, I can’t hide it. We negotiate to achieve this goal and keep it with us (…) I remember a word I said to Messi at half-time against Montpellier: ‘you have to take everyone with you’. He replied: ‘Quiet’. And he had an exceptional second half.
