‘Novak Djokovic should have been allowed to play…’, says expert

on

Novak Djokovic has a good chance of becoming the player with the most titles in history. Despite a season greatly affected by his decision not to get vaccinated against the Coronavirus, the former ATP number 1 managed to bag five titles. The Serbian phenomenon won Wimbledon for the fourth time in a row, the seventh time in his history. In addition to matching his idol Pete Sampras to seven wins at Church Road, Nole moved one step behind Rafael Nadal in the all-time Slam rankings. At 35, the man from Belgrade has added to his 2022 victories the ATP Finals in Turin, the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, the ATP 500 in Astana and the ATP 250 in Tel Aviv. Goran Ivanisevic’s protégé has also been given permission to travel to Australia next month. The Serb will begin his 2023 contesting the Adelaide ATP 250, before going on the hunt for his tenth seal at Melbourne Park. In the latest edition of the ‘Beilinson Tennis’ podcast, well-known commentator Brett Haber made some interesting comments about Djokovic. “People often ask me if Novak Djokovic will become the most titled player in the history of men’s tennis. I am quite convinced that Nole will surpass Rafael Nadal’s Slam record, as he is younger and has fewer physical problems than the Spaniard” – said Haber. “At the same time, I do not exclude that in the future some player may snatch the record from him. Let’s not forget that the Big 3 competed for the biggest titles around the same time. I doubt we’ll ever see anything like this again. Perhaps Carlos Alcaraz is the predestined one I’m talking about. If the surfaces remain similar, it cannot be ruled out that a very talented guy like the Spaniard could reach the 30 Majors,” added Brett.

Croft opens up on Djokovic

Former British tennis pro Annabel Croft has waxed lyrical about Novak Djokovic’s performance at Wimbledon this year. “I think it’s appalling what’s happened and the way it’s turned out (for Djokovic). I just think the whole thing is a mess. Not being able to play Australian and the US Open was just ridiculous. He should have been allowed to play in America because by the time that tournament took place, the restrictions were being lifted all over the world,” Annabel Croft said, speaking to Tennis365. “And when you look forward to next year, there is no doubt in my mind that Novak is the player to beat. You look at the way he played at Wimbledon, even after everything that happened to him, and it was just flawless. He was magnificent and the way he found a way to beat Nick Kyrgois in the final was so impressive,” she said.
