Mirra Andreeva: “My coach doesn’t like people calling me a diva”

Mirra Andreeva revealed the name of her great idol after gaining access to the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career at the age of 16 by clearly beating Diane Parry in straight sets.

The very young Russian player is literally forging ahead and attracting the interest of the tennis world with victories and significant performances. Andreeva joked at the press conference and told a nice anecdote about Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

She explained: “Roger Federer has always been my idol, my number one. But after the Roland Garros last year, when Rafael Nadal won, everything changed in my mind. Now Roger and Rafa are both in first place for me, but I don’t want to offend Novak Djokovic. So let’s say there are three of my favourites.

Djokovic? I met him in the Suzanne-Lenglen lobby as he made his way to the changing rooms. He was singing a song before taking the field. I can’t remember his opponent’s name, but he seemed really relaxed.

This is my first memory. I like the way he plays, he counterattacks very well and is a very good defender. I’ve always watched him, Roger and Rafa on television, dreaming of one day being able to play on these very important courts. Djokovic has won 22 Grand Slams, so my dream is to reach 25. For now, my goal is to think match by match.”

The Russian then told herself and added: “I don’t have any particular hobbies. I think I’m a normal teenager. I like to watch some TV series when I have time. I also have to go to school, but sometimes I don’t! I’m not sure how to describe myself.

I am a nice girl, interested in people. I always like to stay humble, as my coach says. I haven’t been successful yet, I haven’t won any tournaments. I’ll play in the third round of the Roland Garros, and it’s already an incredible thing. I want to be myself, my coach doesn’t like people calling me a diva.”
