Moeen Ali, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) star allrounder, has identified Ben Stokes as a possible replacement for MS Dhoni as the team’s captain.

Dhoni, a veteran wicketkeeper-batter and current skipper of CSK is expected to retire soon, prompting the team to seek a new leader. Stokes, who has significant experience as a captain, is considered a strong contender for the role.

During a press conference prior to a match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Ali praised Stokes for his adaptation to the team and his apparent enjoyment of playing with the Super Kings. Ali also noted that there are other potential candidates for the captaincy, such as Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad, but Stokes’ experience as a captain could give him an edge.

“He’s really enjoying himself,” Moeen said of Stokes. “CSK is the type of franchise where you come here and you do tend to enjoy yourself and really love playing for this franchise. He’s settled in really well. He’s a big part of the team with his experience.”

Despite acknowledging Stokes’ potential, Ali recognized Dhoni’s enviable record in the IPL, which includes winning four titles with CSK and having the most wins of any IPL captain. Ali noted that Dhoni’s impressive track record means that he is likely to remain in charge for the time being.

Ali further emphasized that Stokes has been a valuable member of CSK due to his experience and expertise. He also noted that there is no specific leadership group within the team, and that the captain and coaches communicate frequently. Ali said that if Dhoni wants advice or a chat with Stokes, he is always available.

“There’s no real such leadership group: you have the captain and the coaches, and they talk. If Dhoni wants Ben Stokes’ advice, or a chat with him, it’s a very open environment in that changing room,” added Ali.
