Donna Vekic, 26, reveals for the first time in her career she truly believes that she can win a Grand Slam.
Vekic, ranked at No 64 in the world, has been through to her second Grand Slam quarterfinal at the Australian Open.
On Monday, Vekic defeated Czech teen sensation Linda Fruhvirtova 6-2 1-6 6-3 to progress into her first Australian Open quarterfinal.
In her next match, Vekic plays fifth-ranked Aryna Sabalenka.
“Every player’s goal is to win a Grand Slam title, but the difference now is that I truly believe that I can do it, for the first time in my life,” Vekic told Sasa Ozmo of Tennis Majors.
Vekic backed to win the Australian Open
Iva Majoli, the 1997 French Open champion, told the Australian Open website that she believes Vekic has what it takes to win the Australian Open.
“Very impressive, she’s been looking very confident since she arrived to Australia. United Cup was great, she got to play a few matches, played Kooyong and she played Linda in an exhibition, so she knew what to expect there. She had a good off-season, came to Australia very sharp and very focused and that is being shown in her matches,” Majoli told the Australian Open website.
At the start of the 2023 season, Vekic is still undefeated.
Vekic kicked off her 2023 season at the United Cup, where she won each of her three matches.
After the United Cup, Vekic played two exhibition matches at the Kooyong Classic – she won both of her matches.
Now, Vekic is putting on a strong Australian Open run.
But in her match, she faces the toughest test so far as Sabalenka is waiting for her.
Against Sabalenka, Vekic has a 5-1 head-to-head record.
Sabalenka enters their Australian Open match as the favorite but in-form Vekic definitely can’t be taken lightly.
