By choosing to line up Valentin Rongier and Jordan Veretout in front of the defense, Igor Tudor sentenced Mattéo Guendouzi to the bench or to a position that is not his. Placed a notch higher in the right midfield position, the former Gunner was logically less efficient there, but his last two comebacks against Auxerre and Lens were very encouraging.
A situation which had all the same led Guendouzi to discuss his case with the sports director of OM, Javier Ribalta: “Yes, I had a discussion with Ribaltasaid the midfielder at a press conference. As many players have discussions with their sporting director. The discussion will remain private. I have always been sincere, I say things face to face. It’s a normal discussion, as few have discussions with their director.”
“I’m not asking for anything”
And to continue:I’m not asking for anything at allexplains Guendouzi. I have a contract. Everything I do is for OM. I have always faced up to my responsibilities. I will always do everything for the team, for the club. Certainly, it is not easy to be on the bench, because I am a competitor. On the bench, you feel a little helpless. But when they call on me, I can bring, I am an added value for the team. But if I start or have to return, I will give everything to help the team achieve the objective. I don’t ask for anything, I stay with my values and straight in my boots.” That has the merit of being clear.
Despite a reduction in his playing time, Mattéo Guendouzi still played 40 games (including 31 as a starter) in all competitions with OM this season, for 5 goals and 5 assists.
