‘I don’t control that; all I control is what I do on the field.’
New York Giants left tackle Andrew Thomas does not appear to be losing sleep over his Pro Bowl snub.
“I think anyone that plays this game – they’re competitive and you want to receive accolades for it for what you do on the field,” Thomas said on Thursday. “I don’t control that; all I control is what I do on the field. Just continue to get better. Got a lot of football left so, I look forward to that.”
Thomas was named a third alternate for the Pro Bowl games. The offensive tackles named to the team were Trent Williams of the San Francisco 49ers, Lane Johnson of the Philadelphia Eagles and Tristan Wirfs of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Thomas has the fourth-highest overall blocking grade of any qualifying tackle in the NFL at 86.5, per Pro Football Focus. Only Laremy Tunsil, Christian Darrisaw and Wirfs are ahead of him. Thomas’s pass-blocking score of 88.9 is fifth among tackles.
Pro Bowl or not, in his third season Thomas has clearly arrived as one of the NFL’s dominant offensive tackles.
“I think since my rookie year, I’ve just had a constant increase in understanding my technique, being more consistent in pass pro, same in the run game, and I just get better each week,” Thomas said.
Defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence, named to the Pro Bowl for the first time, admitted surprise that Thomas did not get more support.
“It happens some years. I feel like it takes a year or two to get your name out there and then your name comes up more often the next year after that,” Lawrence said. “So, it’s just about consistency, and I still think he’s playing as [well as] the best tackles in the league. So, just continue to stay consistent and continue getting better.”
