Garbine Muguruza withdraws from Indian Wells qualifying

on

Former world No 1 Garbine Muguruza has withdrawn from the upcoming WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells.

Muguruza, who is now ranked at No 87 and set to exit the top-100 next Monday, started the 2023 season with four consecutive first-round losses.

In late January, Muguruza suffered a Lyon first-round defeat against Linda Noskova.

After losing in Lyon and falling to a 0-4 record in 2023, Muguruza pulled out of Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai.

Now, Muguruza is also out of the Indian Wells qualifying event.

Muguruza, a two-time Grand Slam champion, had a rough 2022 season, in which she went 12-17.

After a difficult 2022 season, Muguruza also got off to a rough start to the 2023 season.

When will Muguruza play again?

Muguruza was in Abu Dhabi but then pulled out on the day of her first-round match due to personal reasons.

Before withdrawing from the Middle East Swing, Muguruza said she needed “to focus on training hard and being humble.”

“I’ve had so many moments in my career where I’ve been so high, and other moments when I’ve not been so high. It’s a process of trying to get back up there. Now I’m focusing on training hard and being humble. You have to know that maybe you haven’t had the success recently as you had in other years, but that’s fine because things can change very quickly. With tennis, one week it can go wrong, then next week it can go well, then everything changes again. I think experience helps me to stay calm in the not-so-good moments when I haven’t been playing as well or results haven’t followed,” Muguruza said.

Withdrawing from Doha “due to personal reasons” was probably an indication that Muguruza decided to take a break from tennis and do some reflecting and analysis before returning to action.

It remains to be seen when will Muguruza be ready to play again.
