Former IBF world champion and IBO Billy “The Kid” Dib is recovering in hospital after an emergency operation to remove a tumor from his stomach on Monday. The current #8 IBF lightweight has asked boxing fans to pray for him.
“10 or 11 days ago I was in a lot of pain and I was sent to a scanner, but it showed something very small,” Dib told Wide World of Sport. They told me not to worry and gave me some medication. But then the next few days I felt really bad and I went to Canterbury Hospital, was prescribed morphine and sent home and said I needed to get a scan, and then when I called for the scan the next day, they said, ‘I’m sorry, we can’t see you until Monday.’
“I told them, ‘I’m dying. Need help please.’ They said, ‘Lord, if you’re dying, call the hospital.’
“Then they took me to my mother’s house and my brother called a friend of his who is a doctor and told me to go immediately to Bella Vista Northwest Hospital. I did that and they found a 5cm tumor in my stomach.”
“They’ve cut it, they’ve said they have everything, but I’m in recovery and it’s very difficult. Who knows what God has planned for me. The tumor was behind my gallbladder. I’m in bed right now, I don’t know if I need chemotherapy in the future. They’ve removed the tumor but want to test it and see what type of cancer it is and if it’s going to spread.
“I’m very lucky. Please tell everyone to pray for me and I love you all.”
