Filippo Volandri: “Carlos Alcaraz is no better than Jannik Sinner”

Before Carlos Alcaraz’s victory against Taylor Fritz, Filippo Volandri analyzed the challenge number 6 of what could soon become one of the best rivalries on the ATP Tour. Jannik Sinner defeated the Spaniard twice: first at Wimbledon and second at Umag in 2022.

However, Alcaraz moved up 3-2 in the calculation of the head-to-head by winning the semifinal of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 in straight sets on March 18th. The match between the two will take place on the Center Court of the Miami Open.

Volandri said: “In 2021, when he lost to Rafael Nadal in Rome, Jannik was very disappointed: he already thought he was at that level. Now he is much more aware, I am convinced it would be a very different match with Carlos than in Indian Wells.

But starting from an assumption: right now Alcaraz is ahead, which doesn’t mean he’s stronger: simply, he first developed his enormous qualities. But Jannik needs to play many of these games: the more he plays, the more he learns, the more he learns to win them and so he can set himself the goal of conquering the big tournaments.”

Volandri on Sinner-Alacaraz: “It will be a different match”

Volandri the added: “Sinner’s current level is already very high: he dominated Emil Ruusuvuori by playing a normal match and in general he learned to win dirty matches.

You could imagine that after the rain break he might have lost some concentration, and instead he finished in 20 minutes. Now is the time to win even the top ones, like the semifinal in Miami, for example. I could talk about the technical improvements, but in reality what is most striking is his continuous drive towards perfection: he searches for everything that can make him a better player.

Now he has a staff chosen entirely by him, to whom he gives the technical addresses and from whom he receives input. And that matters a lot.”
