Elena Rybakina, Victoria Azarenka sign up to start clay season in Charleston

Elena Rybakina and Victoria Azarenka have signed up to compete at the Credit One Charleston Open, the tournament announced.

Rybakina, 23, is set to make her third appearance on the clay courts of Charleston.

Rybakina made her Charleston debut in 2021, when she was forced to retire mid-match during her first-round clash against Caty McNally.

Last year, Rybakina had a first-round bye in Charleston before losing to Anhelina Kalinina in the second round.

On the other side, 33-year-old Azarenka is also set to make her third appearance in Charleston.

Azarenka debuted in Charleston long ago as she made the round-of-16 at the tournament in 2008.

Azarenka last played in Charleston in 2010, when she was beaten by Christina McHale in the second round.

The Charleston organizers thrilled to host Rybakina, Azarenka 

Rybakina and Azarenka are both Grand Slam champion and the Charleston tournament organizers are absolutely thrilled to have them confirmed for their event.

“Adding two Grand Slam champions to an already strong field reinforces the level of talent that will be on display in April at the Credit One Charleston Open. Elena is the defending Wimbledon champion and recently competed in the finals at the Australian Open. Victoria is consistently a top player on tour, winning two Australian Open titles, reaching three US Open finals and just last month playing in the semifinals in Melbourne. We are extremely proud of the caliber and depth of our player field and are excited for our fans to experience the best in women’s tennis in Charleston,” Charleston tournament director Bob Moran said, per the tournament’s press release.

Meanwhile, both Rybakina and Azarenka are currently preparing for the upcoming WTA 1000 events in Indian Wells and Miami.

After the Sunshine Double, Rybakina and Azarenka will stay in the United States to kick off their clay season in Charleston, the tournament which is taking place between April 03-09.

It remains to be seen if Rybakina or Azarenka can make it all the way in Charleston this year.
