Elena Rybakina addresses new career-high ranking: The biggest goal is to be No 1

Elena Rybakina admits she is happy over a new career-high ranking of No 7 in the world but highlighted that her ultimate goal is to be the world No 1.

Rybakina, 23, rose to a new career-high ranking this Monday after beating Aryna Sabalenka in the Indian Wells final.

“I think the biggest goal is of course to be No. 1. There is still long way to go. So this is the kind of end goal, I would say. For now, I’m 7, but you know how quickly the ranking change. So I need to always focus on the next tournament I play. Yeah, I’m just trying not to think so much about the ranking, especially now since it’s a long way to go (smiling),” Rybakina said.

Rybakina on being No 2 on the WTA Race

Rybakina is off to a great start to the 2023 season and she is currently the second on the WTA Race – the first is Sabalenka.

“Not really. I know that now I’m No. 2, I think so. But, I mean, it’s just the beginning of the year, so still many tournaments ahead. It doesn’t mean anything in the beginning, I think,” Rybakina said.

After finishing as runner-up at this year’s Australian Open, Rybakina broke into the top-10 for the first time in her career.

Last summer, Rybakina won Wimbledon but unfortunately her run wasn’t rewarded with any ranking points.

Had the Wimbledon points counted, Rybakina would have been ranked at No 6 after last year’s Wimbledon.

But Rybakina didn’t want to complain as instead she went out and clinched more strong results to reach the top-10.

Rybakina has been on the rise since last year’s Wimbledon and now many consider her a legitimate favorite for title wherever she goes.

Now, Rybakina goes to Miami, where she will aim to win back-to-back titles.

It remains to be seen if Rybakina can absolutely conquer the Sunshine Double.
