Chris Jericho returns to AEW for first time since Worlds End

AEW’s X

The last time we saw Chris Jericho in front of an AEW crowd, he was getting a noticeably mixed reaction from fans in New York at Worlds End. That was due to insinuations about sexual misconduct and social media activity that seemed to back those up. They were a big focus of -PPV media scrum too, so it wasn’t too surprising when he wasn’t used on Dynamite, Rampage or Collision last week.

But AEW did book him in a match at this Saturday’s Battle of the Belts show. There, he’ll use the Tag title shot he won with Kenny Omega with current partner Sammy Guevara (filling in for Omega as he recovers from diverticulitis) against champs Ricky Starks & Big Bill. And to build to that, Guevara and Starks had a singles match on the Jan. 10 Dynamite.

Sammy picked up a pinfall victory, and then extended his hand to his fellow young star. Starks accepted it, but it wasn’t for a heartwarming moment between old friends. It was a trap, with Bill showing up to attack Guevara from behind. With that, “Judas” hit the Daily’s Place speakers once again.

The music never stopped, so it was hard to precisely gauge the reaction. But there weren’t really signs of a backlash from the Jacksonville, Florida crowd. On commentary, Taz made a point to say that people were “going crazy for Jericho”.

We’ll see how the Norfolk, Virginia audience reacts on Jan. 13.
