Canada finish 4th, Australia Women’s Champions in Dubai

on

Australia celebrated victory in the first stop of the new sevens season as they edged defending champions New Zealand in the Cup Final at Dubai. An improved Canada finished in 4th spot, with the USA settling for 7th and Brazil just one spot behind.

The Eagles were no match for Australia in the Quarter finals, but Brazil gave a solid account of themselves losing out to New Zealand by 4 tries to 2. Canada managed to squeeze past Ireland with two conversions by Chloe Daniels to only one by Lucy Mulhall proving the difference.

Under the new ranking system the USA were immediately into the 7th Place Final against As Yaras and the North Americans took out their frustrations with a dominant win. Six tries in all were scored with two each going to Jaz Gray and Naya Tapper.

Canada faced off against New Zealand in the Semi Final and matched them try-for-try but this time it was their opponents who got the edge via Manaia Nuku’s late conversion of a Jorja Miller try. In the Bronze Final the Canadians ran out of steam and could only watch as Yolaine Yengo’s hat-trick propelled France to a convincing win.

The series moves on to Cape Town next weekend.
