Brad Gilbert: Cori Gauff has a great chance to be next great American player

on

Brad Gilbert believes Cori Gauff has the talent to do major things but noted that the rising American star must continue to work hard in order to reach the biggest heights.

Gauff, who will be turning 19 on Monday, is already a Grand Slam finalist and has been ranked as high as No 4 in the world.

When Gauff was just 15, she stunned Venus Williams at 2019 Wimbledon and made the round-of-16 at The Championships as a qualifier.

That was the moment when Gauff was tipped by many to win multiple Grand Slams and reach the world No 1 ranking.

“She (Coco Gauff) has a world of talent and a great opportunity in the next 2-3 years to become the next great American player. But there’s no given that it’s just going to happen,” Gilbert said on The Craig Shapiro Tennis Podcast, per Sportskeeda.

Gilbert weighs in on Gauff, Alycia Parks’ potential

Parks, 22, has been on the rise in recent months.

In late 2022, Parks won back-to-back WTA 125 titles in Andorra and Angers.

Then this past February, Parks stunned world No 5 Caroline Garcia to win her first WTA title in Lyon.

In December, Parks broke into the top-100 for the first time in her career.

Parks continued her ranking rise at the start of the 2023 season, achieving a career-high ranking of No 50 in late February.

“Love to see somebody that wasn’t on people’s radar a few years ago doing what she (Alycia Parks) is doing. Now she’s (No.) 50 in the world, now she’s on people’s radar, now can she make that next leap? That’s the beauty of tennis, the beauty of sports. She wasn’t on the radar, now people know what she’s doing. Can she get better from here?” Gilbert said.

American women’s tennis isn’t lacking talent but Gauff is definitely the most promising and talented player.
