According to Mundo Deportivo, Barca leaders have recently expressed their willingness to cooperate fully with UEFA investigators regarding the Negreira case. This week, representatives of the European body therefore visited the club’s headquarters. But relations are not cordial.

A compensation of 100 million euros?

The newspaper specifies that in the event that UEFA decides to sanction the club before the Spanish courts rule on the Negreira investigation, in first and second instance, Barca will sue him. The Catalan club would indeed intend to demand compensation for damage and loss of profit. The media believe that UEFA could be forced to pay Barca substantial compensation.

For the 2023-24 season, Barça would plan to earn nearly 100 million euros thanks to the C1. Its leaders would consider that there is an “acquired right” to participate in the Champions League, the Europa League or the Conference. And so the clubs are not simply “invited” by UEFA. This right is obtained sportingly during national competitions and could not be considered as a gift.

Barça would also consider that the UEFA statutes cannot go against the legislation in force. The European body must wait for the Spanish judges to rule on the case before making any decision. If she excludes Barca and the courts say there is no evidence, the compensation could be very high.

A precedent exists with Fenerbahçe, which had been sanctioned with two years of exclusion from European competitions before being declared innocent by the courts. UEFA was then taken by default. A similar situation with Barca could cost the European body dearly.
