Andy Murray drops major retirement hint after hitting big milestone in Dubai

Andy Murray seemingly very openly indicated that he just has “a few months left” before his tennis career comes to an end.

On Monday, 36-year-old Murray started his campaign at an ATP 500 event in Dubai with a notable 4-6 7-6 (5) 6-3 comeback win over Denis Shapovalov. For Murray, it was his 500th ATP match win on hard courts.

After starting the 2024 season with four consecutive defeats, former world No. 1 Murray has now won two matches over the last two weeks and now owns a 2-5 record on the year. Over the last couple of months, Murray – who also lost four of his last matches of 2023 – hasn’t had much success and some of his statements from recent months have led to rumors that the Briton may be retiring after this season ends.

In Dubai, Murray appeared to drop another big retirement hint.

“I probably don’t have too long left but I’ll do as best as I can these last few months. I still love competing and still love the game but it gets harder and harder to compete the older you get, to keep your body fit and fresh,” Murray said after his win over Shapovalov.

Murray addresses a reported retirement comment from Doha

Last week, Murray defeated Alexandre Muller in Doha for his first win of the season before losing to Jakub Mensik in the round-of-16. During the loss to Jakub Mensik in the Doha round-of-16, Murray appeared to tell his team that “this game is not for me anymore.” After arriving in Dubai, Murray dismissed that by saying: “People read a lot into what I say on the court and it’s not always rational.”

Following a round-of-16 outing in Doha, three-time Grand Slam champion Murray has now been through to the Dubai round-of-16. In his next match, Murray plays against the winner of the match between Gael Monfils and Ugo Humbert. For Murray, clinching back-to-back wins in Dubai and reaching his first ATP quarterfinal since 2023 February would certainly be huge.
