University of Texas at Austin women’s team started this week

The University of Texas at Austin earned the top spot in last year’s final poll and was ranked No.1 in this year’s preseason poll on Jan. 4. Texas has finished each of the past five years in the Top 10 of the ITA’s final national polls.

Texas will once again host a regional site for the ITA Kickoff Weekend at the Texas Tennis Center. The Longhorns will take on Fresno State on Friday, January 27 (11:00 CT) and Baylor or Loyola Marymount on Saturday, January 28 (2:00 CT). The winners of each regional site advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships February 10-13 (Fri-Mon) in Seattle, Washington.

As reported by the University website, Texas posted a 26-4 double-game record during the 2022 season and captured their second straight and fourth NCAA team title in program history with a 4-1 win against ‘Oklahoma in the championship game. UT has previously won NCAA championships in 1993, 1995, and 2021. The Longhorns join Stanford and Florida as the only schools to repeat as NCAA Division I Women’s Tennis National Champions since 1982.

Texas is selected to win the Big 12 Conference title in a preseason ballot by league coaches. Coaches could not vote for their own teams. UT was selected as a preseason Big 12 favorite for the fifth straight year and the sixth time in poll history. Texas received eight of a possible nine first-place votes and 80 polling points for the upcoming 2023 season.
