Toni Nadal opens up about Rafael Nadal’s retirement plans

on

Rafael Nadal, a 22-time Major winner, has played only 13 matches since last August. The Spaniard has been dealing with a couple of injuries, losing ground after the last year’s Roland Garros and dropping out from the top-10 after nearly 18 years. Despite that, Rafa is eager to return to action and give himself a few more years on the Tour! His uncle and former coach Toni dismissed the retirement claims, saying Rafa still has a passion for the sport and wants to prolong his career. Nadal should return to action in the following weeks after staying away from the court since January, eager to chase his 15th Roland Garros title in June. Rafa debuted in Paris in 2005 and went all the way to become a Major champion a couple of days after turning 19.

The Spaniard started his incredible journey and became the most dominant player at a single Major in history, losing only three matches in Paris and lifting 14 trophies from as many finals! Rafa came to Paris 12 months ago with dark clouds over his head, experiencing early losses in Madrid and Rome and struggling with a foot injury. However, he overcame all the obstacles and beat Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud en route to his 14th Parisian trophy. It remains Nadal’s last ATP title, playing only 13 matches since August last year and winning five.

Rafael Nadal is not thinking about ending his career.

Rafa could not play at his best in the last year’s closing stages, and the start of 2023 brought him nothing good. The Spaniard experienced a massive blow at the Australian Open, failing to chase the title defense and losing almost 2000 ATP points. Rafa experienced a left hip injury and missed seven tournaments, including three on his beloved clay. The Spaniard left the top-10 group after almost 18 years in March, and we are yet to see his return. Nadal will not rush anything after such a long break, but his fans expect to see him in Rome and Paris.

“Rafa would love to be competing now, but that will happen soon. He will play at Roland Garros, and we will base his chances on the upcoming weeks and the Rome Masters. Rafa is not thinking about his retirement. He is still passionate about tennis and wants to fully recover and compete again,” Toni Nadal said.
