Reilly Opelka asked what ATP should change: Get rid of doubles

on

Reilly Opelka thinks doubles as competition should be removed from tennis.

Through his Instagram, Opelka asked some fan questions.

“If you could change one thing about the ATP, what would it be?” one fan asked Opelka on Instagram.

Opelka responded to the question: “Get rid of doubles, only time people watch are when it’s singles players or the bry bros (Bob and Mike Bryan).”

In January, Opelka called doubles players “the most overpaid athletes in the world.”

“Dubs players are the most overpaid athletes in the world,” Opelka tweeted in January.

When asked why he felt that way about doubles players, Opelka claimed that players solely focused on doubles just aren’t selling tickets.

“They don’t sell a single ticket outside of the UK, unless it’s singles players playing doubles. For example, Indian Wells,” Opelka said in another tweet in January.

When will Opelka return to action?

Opelka, a former world No 17, hasn’t played since early August and Washington.

Earlier this year, it was revealed that Opelka decided to have a hip surgery last year and that’s why the American hasn’t played in a while.

Due to his extended absence, Opelka has exited the top-100 for the first time in four years.

Recently, top-ranked American male tennis player Taylor Fritz said it was “just awful” to see Opelka being sidelined for an extended period.

“It’s awful. He started last year really strong. He was playing really good tennis. It sucks. It could happen to any of us at any time. You never know when you can be out for 8 months. It’s really sad to see. He’s one of my best friends. I look forward to seeing him. Haven’t gotten to spend a ton of time with him because he hasn’t been at tournaments,” Fritz said earlier this year.

It remains to be seen when will Opelka return to action.
