Nick Kyrgios asked about his Australian Open chances

Nick Kyrgios says he is doing all the right things to be a contender for the Australian Open title but noted he is not looking too far ahead.

Kyrgios, who finished as runner-up to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, will be aiming to win his first Grand Slam singles title at Melbourne Park in January.

Going into the Australian Open, Kyrgios is viewed as someone who could definitely make a run at Melbourne Park.

“Nothing’s guaranteed. I’m training well, enjoying it, mentally feeling good. That’s all that really matters. Whether I go in there and win the tournament or lose first round, I’m the same person. I’m taking it day by day, I’m a day-by-day person. I’m not thinking ahead at all,” Kyrgios told the AAP.

Kyrgios: Wimbledon is still my best chance

Before the 2022 grass season started, Kyrgios made it clear his big goal was to make a run at Wimbledon.

In the end, Kyrgios did make a strong Wimbledon run but still fell just short of winning the title.

“For sure, of the four (grand slams) Wimbledon’s always been my first shot to win a slam. It’s still true that it’s my best chance, definitely – it’s the biggest one and the most important one,” Kyrgios noted.

Two months after Wimbledon, Kyrgios also had a deep US Open run.

In the US Open round-of-16, Kyrgios defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev.

After knocking out Medvedev, Kyrgios had a very favorable round-of-16 matchup against Karen Khachanov.

Kyrgios didn’t deliver against Khachanov as the Russian edged out the Australian in five sets.

After the match was over, Kyrgios was extremely disappointed and visibly dejected.

In his post-match press conference, Kyrgios said the Grand Slam tournaments are the ones that really count.

Now, Kyrgios has another chance to become a Grand Slam champion.

It remains to be seen if Kyrgios can deliver in front of his home fans this January.
