The Spanish press has revealed new elements on the Negreira case, and the gifts offered by the old arbitration issue. UEFA could exclude Barça from European cups next season.

The excitement caused by the Negreira affair does not dry up in Spain. Barca have admitted paying almost €7m to former refereeing number two José María Enriquez Negreira over a period of around 17 years. Justice suspects a big case of corruption and a procedure is underway to clarify the roles of each. This Tuesday, the Iberian press again disclosed elements.

Negreira’s amazing gifts to referees

According to information fromEl Mundo, José María Enriquez Negreira notably used the money paid by the Catalans to offer a multitude of gifts to referees. Investigators’ investigations are all the easier as they appear to be “tax deductible expenses” on the old society of Negreira. We thus find 10,000 euros worth of hams, match tickets, beach rackets, umbrellas, sandwiches, or even insulated bags… The invoices also show invitations to restaurants, sometimes for amounts greater than 2,000 euros the meal, or the purchase of foodstuffs such as “sweets, wines, liqueurs and cheeses” or many lotto tickets.

El Confidential understands that UEFA is following the case very closely. The media reveals that the body could take sanctions against Barça in the coming weeks. She would consider bringing a civil action, like Real Madrid. The Catalans may well have breached Article 50 of the statutes which could lead UEFA to consider their club as “ineligible to participate in the competition” of the 2023-2024 season. Given Barca’s state of indebtedness, such a move could have dramatic repercussions and downright jeopardize its existence. Catalan supporters can tremble…
