• MXA AD OF THE WEEK: BRAND NEW 1975 CZ125 SPORT ONLY $399 IN THE CRATE

By 1975 CZ had lost its mojo with American motorcycle racers, but they felt that they could attract casual street riders with their CZ 125 and 175 Sport street bikes. They were wrong. They were so over-stocked that they  dumped the bikes on a liquidator who sold them in the crate for $399 for the 125 Sport and $448 for the 175 Sport.

• BEAUTY IS ONLY SKIN DEEP, BUT WITH RACE ENGINES, IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS

There is a lot of speculation about the source of the just released Triumph 250 motocross engine, with many people claiming that it is a copy of the KTM 250SXF engine. We have to admit that they bear some similarities, but that is true of almost any current 250 motocross engine. You can’t tell a book by its cover or a motocross engine, by its outer castings. The proof is inside the engine—and even though Triumph is making a mess of their 2024 product launch by doing piecemeal intros, with dark videos and the same five talking heads, albeit highly qualified spokesmen. Below are the two engines, side by side. You be the judge, but if you did that on the novel “Gone With the Wind,” you’d think it was a book about hurricanes.

• DUST OFF YOUR LEATHERS! THE “ROAR AT ZOAR” IS COMING BACK ON SEPT. 23-24

On September 23-24, the long closed Zoar Moto-Park will mark its 50th Anniversary with a reunion and ride day. Volunteers have been clearing the over grown brush under the guidance of Ed Abdo and the restoration of this once famous track will be ready for the 50th Anniversary Reunion and Ride Day. There is a facebook page (Zoar Motopark) for the event that posts pics of the work done so far, and updates.

The tower at Zoar wasn’t a metal structure. It was made from logs in an a tee-pee pattern. Zoar Moto-Park had a lot of big downhills, but the tower had the biggest drop.

Zoar Moto-Park is in Springville, New York, located 45 minutes southeast of Buffalo,  hosted an AMA 250 National and 500 Trans-AMA on September 23, 1973 and a 250 Inter-Am (with a 125 World Cup) on July 28, 1974. The riders who raced at Zoar include Pierre Karsamkers, Mike Hartwig, Tim Hart, Jim Pomeroy, Tony DiStefano, Gary Jones, Gary Semics, Jim Weinert, Marty Smith, Bob Harris, Rich Thorwaldson, John Franklin and Steve Stackable.  Ed Abdo spearheaded bringing the track back to its original layout . This iconic track is well known for its hills and natural terrain layout as well as being the home track of  local heroes Frank and Andy Stacy from Cheektowaga.  We want to thank Mark Williams for bringing the 50th Reunion to MXA’s attention.  Forgotten motocross tracks don’t often get the opportunity to make a comeback, so mark your calendar, dust off your old gear and be there! • MXA VIDEO TEST: 2024 KTM 450SXF FOUR-STROKE

• MXA PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT: URMOSI SOFT BAR MOUNTS

The Urmosi soft bar mounts are an elastomer-controlled set of handlebar mounts that retrofit on most standard triple clamps. They differ from other energy-absorbing bar mounts, such as the Neken SFS, Xtrig PHDS and Flexx bars, in that the Urmosi soft bar mounts don’t just work in a downward motion in line with the forks, but damp out vibrations, impacts and chatter bumps over 360 degrees of motion.

First and foremost, they are very strange looking. The handlebars are encapsulated inside two rings of rubber held in large round housings. When you push down on the bars, they float, not just downward but rearward, forward, upward and from side to side. When pressure is applied from the clutch or throttle sides, the bar ends move. Also, the Urmosi soft bar mounts raise the handlebars 1/2 inch. That may sound like a small amount, but it’s a lot to a picky rider. To our surprise, each test rider came back raving about how the Urmosi soft bar mounts eliminated vibration, helped the suspension in square-edge bumps and lessened arm pump. Most riders preferred the soft yellow elastomer rings over the firmer blue rings; the yellow rings last 80 hours before they need replacing (replacement rings are $25). When the soft elastomers started to wear out and get too soft, we installed the stiffer blue elastomer rings that come in the package—they last 100 hours).

Bar height was an issue for some test riders. The lowest available bars are stock Yamaha handlebars, but we found the stock GasGas bars to be acceptable. On the track, test riders reported that they couldn’t feel the movement that they witnessed in the pits. Every Vet test rider who rode with the Urmosi clamps loved the feel of the bars—and we mean they “loved them,” to the extent that some of them ordered Urmosi bar mounts for their personal bikes. Riders who did off-road races loved them the most. As we progressed to faster test riders, they were more sensitive to the movement and more vocal about their issues. This was not a surprise, because Vet riders can’t use Pro-level suspension settings, gearing, powerbands or setup, either. In short, the Urmosi bar mounts are for riders looking for comfort, recovery from wrist injuries or reduced hand fatigue—and that is a very big market.

At $399, they are expensive, but that is the same price as Flexx bars, $300 less than the Neken SFS air-damped top triple clamp, and $150 more than the XTrig PHDS bar mounts. They are not for every rider, but those who suffer from their hands going numb, have wrist issues or are looking for a plusher ride, this is the bar-mount system to go with. We were shocked by how many Vet riders raved about the Urmosi bars mounts. The retail price is $399.00 (bar mounts, crossbar pad and two densities of polymer inserts). Some models require a $25 adaptor kit to match the stock triple clamps. Learn more at www.urmosi.com.
