Mats Wilander: Novak Djokovic will play on one leg at Australian Open if he has to

Mats Wilander says Novak Djokovic very openly speaking about his hamstring injury is definitely a concern but noted he expects the Serb “to play at one leg if he has to” at the Australian Open.

During his Australian Open second-round win over Enzo Couacaud, Djokovic was evidently hampered by a hamstring injury and at one moment he needed to leave the court for a medical timeout.

“That is not reassuring because I don’t remember him saying anything like that about his body. I really don’t. Rafa [Nadal] is obviously always very honest and he gets asked all the time. You never really see Novak injured, and if he is, he’s always very quiet about it. So that’s a worry. The good think for Novak, when he’s a little bit injured, he can do so much with a tennis ball these days, he can flatten out the forehand, and for his serve. He served brilliantly. As long as he can go through the matches, he’ll find another way of playing tennis that I think very few players can do. Of course, it’s a worry, but tactically he’ll play on one leg if he has to,” Wilander told Eurosport

Djokovic honestly said it is not looking good

After clinching a four-set win over Couacaud, Djokovic was asked by Eurosport about his hamstring injury.

In his answer, Djokovic was straight honest.

“It’s not good at all, to be honest with you. I take it day to day. It was better last match, the feeling, than tonight. It’s really up to God to help me, and the physio and everyone. I hope I’ll be able to recover and be ready for a tough match-up next match,” Djokovic told Eurosport.

On Saturday, Djokovic will be playing Grigor Dimitrov in the Australian Open third round.

Djokovic is now set for a tougher competition and it remains to be seen how will his hamstring hold up against Dimitrov.
