It’s never easy for a young player to find his bearings when his father was a great player. So when your father is none other than Zinedine Zidane… However, the Zizou siblings are doing relatively well. Enzo Zidane currently plays in Fuenlabrada, one of the strongholds of the Spanish D3. Some will say it’s low, but becoming a professional player is not given to everyone and it’s already a great accomplishment. Theo, 20 years old, is currently playing with Raul’s Real Madrid Castilla, while Elyaz Zidane, the youngest (17), is impressing everyone with the reigning European champion’s U19s. But if there is one who is on the rise at the moment, it is Luca.

After a somewhat complicated pro debut, it was last season, at Rayo Vallecano, that he proved to have the qualities for the top level. Faced with strong competition with Stole Dimitrievski, one of the benchmarks for the post of goalkeeper in La Liga, the Frenchman was still able to play 8 league games, leaving great feelings. Then, this summer, he decided to go to the second division, to one of the big contenders for the climb, Eibar. The opportunity to finally become a starter. However, in the north of Spain, the competition is just as tough, since he has as partners and competitors Aitor Cantero, holder last year, and Yoel, goalkeeper who has great experience and has several seasons in La Liga in the paws.

A decisive goalkeeper

And so far, things are going particularly well. On a collective level already, since the Basque team is first in Spanish D2, but also on an individual level, since if Eibar is in a good position to find La Liga, it is partly thanks to him. Particularly interesting statistic: this season, in 20 league games, he has made 12 clean sheets (games without conceding a goal)! He is also the third goalkeeper with the best save percentage in Iberian D2, stopping 84.1% of the opponent’s shots. This weekend again, against Burgos, the Basques won 1-0, and Luca Zidane signed some good interventions, in the first period especially when the score was 0-0, and a splendid save to avoid the equalizer a few minutes after his team’s goal. The second period was quieter for the Frenchman, who once again showed that he is a very good goalkeeper.

Rather discreet in the media, in a very quiet and less distressing media context, Luca Zidane flourishes. Far from the Bernabéu for example, where the pressure is terrible and his last name weighed, of course. Coveted by Montpellier last summer when he was free, the goalkeeper trained at Real Madrid has a good chance of playing in La Liga next season. Even if, inevitably, a question arises: will Eibar continue to bet on him, or will the Basques bet on a goalkeeper with a CV a little more provided if they go up? For the moment, everything indicates that Luca Zidane has the necessary qualities to start in the Spanish first division… But with a contract that expires in 2024, Eibar will have to make a decision fairly quickly.
