long-term contracts are controversial in the Premier League

Pro-active on the transfer market, Chelsea annoys in England. While the London club has paid out more than €500m since last summer, several Premier League clubs would see the length of its contracts as a way of circumventing the rules of financial fair play, according to the DailyMail.

While Mykhaylo Mudryk has signed up for eight seasons with Chelsea, while Benoît Badiashile and Marc Cucurella are now also linked to the club for seven years, this long-term contract practice would in fact be prohibited. Indeed, according to the rules governed by FIFA, clubs are only allowed to offer players contracts of a maximum duration of five years. A hole in the racket? Perhaps, since Chelsea would effectively turn those extra years into an “optional extension”, which could be triggered by the club.
